Yuya Yoshimatsu is an oil painter based in Barcelona, Spain, originally from Fukuoka, Japan. Yoshimatsu is also a member of the Fukuoka-based collective CCS Records, and his works under the psuedonym ‘Pen Public’ have involved him in a wide range of creative practices, including drawing, music production, design, art direction, and more. 

This piece is a segment from a continuing series of oil paints, "Lines and Colours". Here Yoshimatsu takes his usual practice and brings it to Europe for the first time, basing his first five paintings in Barcelona on the Placas found in the Vila de Gracia neighbourhood, where all of the paintings where made. Each piece begins with monochromatic lines running horizontally across the canvas, gradually building layers of various coloured lines until the canvas is completely filled.

Statement:

“When I draw these lines, I always envision the cherished individuals I’ve encountered in my life, and I reflect on the many creative endeavours and activities surrounding me at the time i’m making the painting. The lines juxtapose each other on the canvas and start to create an image of myself, my world, my life, surrounded by my friends, loved ones, and all of their relationships - and the completed image as a whole depicts me as an artist in that time.”
