‘Saudade’ (Portuguese) - a feeling of yearning for that which is not there; implies a sense of sorrow, melancholy and nostalgia.
This work presents a portrait of San Francisco Ozolotepec, a mountainside village deep in the southern region of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range in Oaxaca, Mexico. The villages in that area of the mountain range are home to a community of Zapoteco people, whose history as an Indigenous group in Oaxaca dates back far before the Common Era.
A story of both generational strength and loss, Saudade is a glimpse into the changes surrounding the Zapoteco community’s relationship with the land they have lived on for hundreds of years. All shot on 35mm film, the 70+ photographs in this work characterise the power behind the word Saudade through a compelling and honest portrait of the life of the modern Indigenous man in Mexico.
